Google Analytics bit.ly tagging

Bit.ly (or it's shorter alias j.mp) and other URL shortening tools are a fantastic way of turning long urls into more manageable ones - ideal for Twitter etc.

Even better is the fact that bit.ly has great reporting built in - ideal because accountability & measurement are key with online marleting.

A downside though is Google Analytics can have problems with these links. imagine you tweeted a great, trend setting tweet (we all wish!) and it gets retweeted a bazillion times with the bit.ly link being clicked from Twitter web, seesmic. Tweetdeck, hootsuite etc. The problem is this: you launch Google Analytics expecting to see a huge wave of traffic from Twitter but you don't - because of the 301 redirects and the fact that this links are clicked outside of twitter means that that killer information is lost.

However...there is an answer.

The answer is quite simple - just tag your link with the correct Google Analytics campaign variables before you shorten it with bit.ly. You can then look at campaign reports in Google Analytics for a true picture.
